After the wedding ceremony, we had our tea ceremony. The tea set was a gift from my grandmother. It had an iridescent pearl finish. It was carefully chosen for its theme - two creatures from folklore - Yan and Yang - adorn the set. The story goes that one cannot live without the other, literally. A perfect representation for the occasion! There is a poem on the other side of the teapot:
'Bright pearls in union like the pairing ducks,
Beautiful jades in pairs at the phoenix's house'
There is also a beautiful lotus on the teaset which represents 'My Beautiful Lotus' (丽莲), my wife's Chinese name.
The tea set
The tea ceremony itself was very eventful. My side went first. For the hour or so, everyone's joy seemed to be translated into increasing decibels! We didn't mind, of course! The Wife's side was much more subdued in volume but equally as joyful. The orderly manner in which it proceeded also gave us an opportunity to regroup our energy. Although the 2 hours of the tea ceremony was tiring - we had to bend forward for most of the time! - we were glad to be introduced to each others' (numerous) relatives. The Wife enjoyed all the titles of our relatives e.g: 'suk kong lou yeah', 'ku poh lai lai'.....
Here's a small selection of our favourite moments...
