We arrived in JFK Airport to a less than warm welcome as I was whisked away to a detention room for 'further processing'. After an hour and a half in the land of lost time, I felt very sad for those subject to arbitrary mistreatment by the seemingly power-crazy immigration officers. We had to watch a woman get handcuffed by 12 officers when complaining for being held without notice or explanation. When we got on the subway later, we saw ads from the governor with a number to call if relatives go missing or are mistreated by immigration officers. How shocking.
Due to the lateness of our arrival, our room was given away but as a result we got an upgrade and slept like babies. The next day was a full day of touristy sightseeing starting with learning how to navigate the confusing subway system which runs by alphabets and numbers. The experience made us to be more appreciative of the tube system in London. The grid layout of NYC was great though. The block system makes a city which ought to feel incredibly crowded and disorganised feel neat and airy.
The Flatiron building
The Grand Central Terminal.
Its interior is so stately and beautiful.
The ceiling of the terminal was covered with 'stars'.
The marbled surfaces added to the old-timey luxurious look.
Managed to catch a line of yellow cabs waiting at the traffic lights.
The Nikola Tesla corner commemorating where he loved to feed pigeons in the nearby Bryant Park.
The Chrysler Building from below.
The New York Public Library- another stunning display of architecture.
Outside the library
Radio City
Fifth Avenue Building
St. Patrick's Cathedral
We ended the day by sharing a Halal Guys combo meal which we wolfed down as we racked up quite a few steps that day.
